  1. Government today launched a campaign (full page advertisement in all leading newspapers) to highlight the advantages of allowing Foreign Direct Investment, FDI, in multi-brand retail that will create more jobs, benefit consumers and help farmers to get better price for their production.
  2. At least 26 Pakistani military personnel were killed, and 14 others were wounded in an attack by NATO aircraft across the Durrand line on Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Washington regrets the loss of life among any Pakistani servicemen, and promised to work closely with Pakistan to find out what happened, while Islamabad has strongly protested the incident and has blocked NATO's supply routes that pass through its territory to Afghanistan. What is happening is that the United States is making it clear that if its forces come under attack from Pakistani territory, they will retaliate.
  3. Finance Minister has signed the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement with Nepal, replacing the one signed in 1987.
  4. In Kerala, an expert team of scientists from Centre for Earth Science Studies are undertaking an impact study on Mullapperiyar dam (116 year old) since a series of low intensity tremors felt in Idukki district. Experts say that the water level needs to be reduced to 120 feet from the present 136 feet to ensure safety of the dam. The Centre has already made it clear that all possible steps will be initiated to sort out the dam issue between Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Kerala's main demand is to construction of a new dam decommissioning the existing one, while TN claims that the dam is on a 999 year lease to Tamil Nadu as it was signed during the British regime by the then princely state.
  5. The authorities in Togo (Africa) said that at least six leading Football players of  Etoile Filante team have been killed after a bus carrying them plunged into a ravine and caught fire.
  6. In Assam, National Rural Health Mission in collaboration with UNICEF, has taken initiative to identify district hospitals as Baby Friendly to promote better health care facilities and exclusive breast-feeding which is likely to bring down Infant Mortality Rate, IMR, in the state.
  7. The Regional Museum of Natural History situated in Mysore, has a special garden (managed by Union Environment Ministry) for visually impaired and deaf children who can touch these plants, feel their texture and smell their aroma to identify the plants with the help of information provided in braille. It also provides out of school facility for school children on curriculum-based studies in biology and geology with emphasis on environmental aspect. It is one of its kind effort in the country to impart education about plant species among the visually and hearing impaired children. There are such gardens situated in Chennai and Lucknow but it is for the first time in the country that the facility is provided in a museum premises.
  8. For the common people of Manipur who have been suffering from the 119 days' economic blockade on the National Highways of the state with twine burdened of price hike and scarcity of essential commodities, are enjoying a good time at different food stalls of the ten-days ongoing Manipur Sangai Festival at Imphal.
  9. Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia bagged the first prize in the 21 kilometre long Delhi Half Marathon in the men's category today. Lucy Kabuu of Kenya emerged champion in the women's category. Other categories included the race for Senior Citizens and wheel chair participants. Nearly thirty thousand, five hundred people participated in the event which is considered one of the most prestigious Half Marathon in the world.
